Finding Minimo

It looks like your next Mozilla-based web browser won't be found on your PC, it might just be on your cell phone or PDA. Recently announced, Minimo is the Mozilla Foundations answer to the advances Opera has made in the mobile market. Unlike that of Mozilla or Firefox where the battle for the desktop browser, the mobile market is largely unseen by the consumer. Finding out which browser your PDA or cell phone is running is a little harder. Who knows, soon you might be finding Minimo.

25 Million and Counting!

Firefox has been downloaded over 25 million times since it's official launch last year. Still, Internet Explorer's dominating market share, which is 92.7 percent dwarfs Firefox's 4.8 percent.

Is Firefox ready for the Enterprise?

We at Mozcafe have been talking about Firefox and the enterprise market for some time. Now others are as well. Penetrating the enterprise market is more than adding product features. It's a long journey into understanding how corporations use web browsers and the items/technology required to support them. We whole-hearted agree that there's a market, but does the foundation have the desire (or patience) to play in this market?

The next versions of Firefox and Mozilla will disable IDN support as a short-term answer to a spoofing vulnerability.

Who's Afraid of Firefox?

At the RSA Conference 2005 in San Francisco today, Microsoft via Bill Gates, announced that the next version of IE, version 7, will be released ahead of schedule. Initially planned to be release inside the next version of Window (Longhorn), IE 7 promised to make browsing more secure. No new major features announced yet, but we doubt Microsoft is doing this to be a nice corporate entity. You don't need a degree in rocket science to figure out that ol' Microsoft is getting some pressure from it's corporate clients looking to switch to Firefox. It will be interesting to see what inside IE 7, or it's just another round of F.U.D. coming out of Redmond.

Every couple of weeks, someone reports that a certain large search engine (hint: it rhymes with "Doogle") would incorporate Firefox in someway. Nope, this time is Ask Jeeves. We're not sure what/who is prompting Jeeves to think about Firefox, but we sure it's not for the good of open source. The smell on money is wafting in the air somewhere over Emeryville...

It looks like we won't be seeing a new version of Firefox till next June. With Ben Goodger moving on to Google, we hope we don't see a slow down of the great momentum Firefox is making.

Now Open... Mozcafe, the Blog!

Some of you in the Mozilla community might remember MozCafe from the earlier days of the Mozilla movement. Back then, Juraj Betak and others stepped up to the plate to help contribute a spell checker and dictionaries for the Mozilla browser. While the spell checker was eventually rolled into the main code base, many still find us for our excellent source of dictionaries. We're glad we can still help the movement in a positive way.

So what this blog all about? We've always stayed interested in the happenings of Mozilla, Firefox and all the other project of the foundation, we admit that 'real world' life got in the way of love for all thing Mozilla. This blog, hopefully, will allow us to begin to get back on track and maybe, help some of you stay more informed along the way. Mozcafe, the blog is now open for business.
